School building, Valendas

Starting situation and idea

The school was built in 1960 and includes the classroom and sports hall wings. Since commissioning the new sports and multi-purpose hall in 1993, the old ports hall was used for various classes. In order to add flexibility of usage and to ease out provisional arrangements, a rebuilding and extension concept was needed.

Approach

The pile foundation on which the old sports hall was built in its time for financial reasons, called for a lightweight design. Wood for structural elements and the façade was obtained from the municipality’s forests. Execution time was kept short by using dry mortarless construction with minimum imission even as the school was kept running.

Challenges

Narrow budgetary and time constraints had to be met despite difficult framework conditions. At the interface between old and new buildings, several minor buildings had to be accommodated and adjusted without compromising their suitability or future usability.
