CTL Industrial Building, Poschiavo

Starting situation and idea

IBW Chur, which runs a forest and wood training centre in Maienfeld, initiated a Swiss-Italian pilot project with partners to set up a wood industry training centre. Plans envisaged building a wood technology centre in Poschiavo which would attract Swiss and Italian professionals.

Approach

In order to retain the façade as a remnant from the age of industrialisation, the building was insulated from the inside. The windows were carefully restored and fitted with insulating panes. The building was repurposed only by adding furniture without changing its structure to underscore the hall’s old charm.

Challenges

The newly founded company CTL SA acquired the former serpentine stone workshop adjacent to the railway station. The existing industrial building made of RC and brick from the early 20th century had impressive architectonic qualities and was worth conserving.
