‘Central’ – residential and commercial building, St. Moritz

Starting situation and idea

The Central site is located in the prime area in the core zone of St. Moritz-Bad on Via dal Bagn, which directly leads to the town centre. Before the Second World War, this was where Hotel Central stood, which was subsequently demolished. The site remained unbuilt for many years and served as a car park.

Approach

The contemporary architecture is impressive for its free form and historic designs on the façade. Thermal energy for heating and hot water is obtained from a geothermal probe field 2,500m long and a downstream heat pump. Waste heat from the sewage is recovered and pumped back into the system.

Challenges

The client expected an attractive and energy-efficient residential and commercial building with flexibly usable areas in the residential and commercial floors. Residential units were to be facing southwest or south because of the pronounced slope and the view of the lake. The project was expected to meet MINERGIE-P standards.
