Starting situation and idea

Widening cracks in the cupola worried the congregation. An analysis conducted by Fanzun revealed that the roof truss was incorrectly altered during renovation in the 1960s. The resulting horizontal stresses split open the external masonry.

Approach

After restoring the roof truss, a three-dimensional steel frame was installed to hold together the two longitudinal facades and absorb the horizontal strain. The wooden roof truss was replaced, and the façade restored. The mural in the main entrance of the church was also restored.

Challenges

The slender, tall nave stood without any visible struts in the interior. The congregation and the conservation authority therefore wished to neutralise the horizontal forces in the roof truss, which was a big challenge.
